project background
our team was composed of 2 industrial designers & 5 ux designers. we were tasked with designing a product that worked to support the united nation's 17 sustainability goals using technology developed for space.
our biggest challenge was finding deciding the most appropriate solution based on our problem understanding research on natural disaster response and conversations with first responders.
ideation & design
through our research, we began to understand that first responders are lacking resources on the ground-but this is not the biggest problem. the resources that do exist are poorly organized, and the agencies helping on the ground often struggle to organize effectively; adding more stress to those on the front lines.
so, we wanted to create a disaster response eco-system that automates patient triage, provides real-time guided support for first responders, and protects patients in dangerous environments.
one part of the ecosystem i was in charge of designing is vitalsight, an ar wearable for first responders that provides real-time guided support, and the ability to monitor on assigned patients. the interface design was guided by ar usability heuristics. specifically, the interface shouldn't reduce visibility so as to prevent responders from doing their job. so it uses micro-gestures to bring up certain features to increase efficiency, and to better integrate the digital and physical experience.

results & validation
after redesign
we also conducted an interview with a firefighter that works in remote locations to find out what problems they experience on the ground, and a digital ethnography to patient needs in natural disaster response in haiti and mozambique.
from here we created user personas to narrow down goals, challenges and needs of first responders. and, a journey map to gain a better understanding about how their needs change throughout the disaster response.
